Unfortunately when you leave forums open to non registered users anyone can post, which includes spammers. What happens is that when the forums are indexed by search engines, they gain page ranking for their sites. It's absolutely beneficial to them to spam the living hell out of your boards because they can create bots to do it for them without much input on their part.
It's really shitty, and they should be taken out back and beaten with a rubber hose filled with cork, but hey...what can you do?
I wish there was a way to legally pursue them and sue them until they figure out that they can't do that, but with the internet being freely open.../shrug
